Prolific Hybrids
The term “Prolific Hybrid”
refers to the individual corn plants’ ability to produce, pollinate and
fill more than one ear per stalk. The MASTERS CHOICE
prolific program is based on developing hybrids that perform well in
marginal production situations. The first step to success in this program
is reduced planting rates and low populations.
It is a fact that not all soils can support high populations of corn
plants through stress situations. Not all soils have the same cation
exchange capacity (cec), the same water retention capacity, etc. It is
therefore unreasonable to expect our soils that are lacking in these
characteristics to be able to support the high populations being planted
on the more productive soils. Yet, many of the corn growing experts
continue to suggest that you must plant high populations for maximum
yields. Our common sense should tell us that this is not true if we use
hybrids that are capable of expanding their yield as growing conditions
allow.
Intense populations in marginal growing conditions create unsupportable
competition between the corn plants and increase the risk of failed
production. It also increases the risk of loss from insects and diseases
because plants under stress are more susceptible to damage from both
insects and diseases.
Masters Choice Research has spent nearly 25 years
developing breeding stocks from which we make hybrids that give you an
alternative to high populations. By using prolific hybrids growers have
produced over 300 bu./acre with populations of less than 18,000 plants per
acre, 250 bu./acre with only 14,000 plants per acre.
As you go forward, you will find two hybrids that have prolific
capabilities,MC-550 and MC-625

NEW MC-550
110 Day (Grain and Silage)
High quality grain on a solid white cob that holds together through
harvest.
-Good under stress conditions
-Good standability |
| For extreme
quality grain and silage this one has it all! On top of the great
quality, it is one of the most prolific grain hybrids we’ve ever
produced. Try this one at 15,000-18,000 for prolific grain or
27,000-30,000 for best yielding silage. Has earned the prestigious
MPG rating. |

MC-625
115 day variety. |
| It
has the distinction of being the owner’s favorite. Extremely dense
leaves and stalk, combine to give 625 the highest 5-carbon sugar
levels of any hybrid we’ve tested. The starch availability is
usually 100% making it the perfect choice for nutritious grain,
silage or ethanol production. |
